You may not know this yet, but around the age of 50, your body unleashes a protein that seems to eat away at muscle tissue.
Okay so not literally “eating away” but it does seem like it when you see your muscles gradually shrink over time.
This muscle-eating protein unfortunately contributes to a lot of men feeling weak, fat, and slowly drained of energy.
It’s not the hormone estrogen, which is what most people think. It’s also not cortisol. And it’s not just that you have low T.
Here’s some background: the military has actually been doing extensive research on this hormone for years. And guess what? If you BLOCK this hormone… muscle-building becomes far easier, no matter how old you are.
Some even describe it as having a whiplash effect in men over 50, meaning it can work extremely fast… And by simply shutting off this hormone, you can pack on more fresh, chiseled muscle faster than before.
And with this change, you can also melt away those extra pounds that seem to keep packing on every birthday, every Thanksgiving, every Christmas (they really add up over time, don’t they?).
This protein is myostatin: a signaling protein from your muscles that acts like a natural regulator of muscle growth. In plain English, myostatin helps keep muscle from growing unchecked.
And that “brake” function is real. In fact, one of the most striking pieces of evidence comes from a rare human myostatin mutation associated with unusually large muscle mass… strong support that myostatin truly limits muscle development in people.
So why should men over 50 care? It’s probably a bit obvious…
1) Muscle is the “metabolic engine” you’re trying to keep
After 50, muscle isn’t only about looking lean. It’s about:
- joint stability
- glucose control
- balance and fall prevention
- energy levels
- Healthy weight
When muscle shrinks, daily life gets harder, and the body becomes more vulnerable.
2) This “muscle brake” can become more relevant as conditions shift
Researchers have studied myostatin in aging for years. Their goal for all men is to help us understand that there are signals that push toward muscle loss. When you can notice those signals, you can do something about it. Which is why we’re talking about it today.
The obvious actions you can take are what we repeat all the time because of how valuable they are. The first? Eat the right foods. In this instance, the right foods are eating enough protein. If you want to maintain good muscle mass, you should be eating grams of protein equal to 60-75% of your body weight in pounds.
And the second action is, surprise: exercise. Specifically, you should be lifting weights. Proper resistance training 2-3 times a week helps you keep the muscle you have.
There is one other action to take, which actually helps encourage the development another protein that counters the myostatin’s “muscle brake.”
And this goes back to the military research I mentioned earlier. A friend of mine sent me to this report from one ex-military man who experimented with it. His story is relatable to millions of men who look and feel awful as they’ve gotten older. This should help you feel like you’re in your prime again.
